Cutter Suction Dredgers
Dredging with a cutter suction dredger takes place while the vessel is moored with spuds or anchors and consists of powerful cutting action combined with suction. Cutter suction dredgers are used where the ground is too hard for trailing suction hopper dredgers.
Cutter suction dredgers are mainly used for constructing and expanding ports and navigational channels and for pipeline trenching in the seabed. Dredged material is either used for land reclamation or disposed of by barge or by pumping it ashore through a pipeline.
There are two types of cutter suction dredger:
- Self-propelled, seagoing cutter suction dredgers
- Stationary cutter suction dredgers
